Indonesian student wins int`l technology award

An Indonesian student from the Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Ramadhan Chairan Maulana, has won an award at the 6th International Symposium on Technology for Sustainability 2016.

"We are proposing a paper on a technology that helps climbers in getting information on weather around the mountain," Ramadhan said here on Monday.

The technology named Arduino based Safety Information Guidance for Climbers displays weather information around the mountain, including temperature, humidity, and air pressure.

"Also, the tool displays a security level and health impacts that are possible to occur to climbers according to the data," he explained.

Ramadhan added that the tool, which is also called "Duo Serigala" or two wolves has a navigation system that shows the starting point and the peaks.

There is also a S.O.S button that functions to call an emergency help. "This feature works based on radio frequency. I hope this equipment helps climbers in completing their climbing and prevent accidents," Ramadhan said.

The international symposium has been participated in by 200 university students from Japan, the Philippine, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.

It was a collaboration of the Gadjah Mada University and Japan National Institute of Technology

Japan plans to develop a deep sea water project in Indonesia to produce renewable energy and electrify remote islands in the country, Maritime and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti has said.

"The technology will be developed in Morotai Island (in North Maluku) as one of 12 integrated fishery centers (SKPT)," Susi said here on Friday.

Earlier on Thursday, she said, Japan had offered the deep sea water technology during a meeting in Jakarta to which the ministry had responded positively.

The ministry has launched the SKPT program to attract investment and optimize business potential in the region, Susi said.

Japan has offered to develop renewable energy to electrify small and remote islands in Indonesia, the ministrys Director General of Sea Management Bramantyo Satyamurti Poewardi said.

The technology takes advantage of the temperature difference between the sun-warmed surface water and cold deep water to generate electricity.

The cold deep water could also be used for tuna fish farming, he said, expressing hope that the country will succeed in its efforts to get the technology.

Japan has reportedly intensified its efforts to promote investment in the fishery sector in Indonesia, including a plan to build tuna breeding and fish processing industries in some regions.

Indonesias Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) has agreed on a commitment with Japans Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) for mutual support in promoting and increasing investment in the country.

With the countrys economic growth at five percent amidst the global slowdown, Indonesia has become an interesting location for investment, BKPM chief Thomas Trikasih Lembong said.

Japans total investment during January to September amounted to US$4.4 billion in 2,122 projects, and has made it the second biggest investor in Indonesia after Singapore, whose total investment is US$7.12 billion

Indonesias Minister of Defense Ryamizard Ryacudu said he was yet to reach an agreement about the Sukhoi SU-35s price offered by Russia.

"Just wait, I still have to bargain," he stated here on Friday.

Indonesia plans to buy eight Sukhoi SU-35 war aircraft from Russia to replace the Indonesian Air Forces F-5E/F Tiger II.

Minister Ryacudu noted that Indonesia was still interested to purchase the battle aircrafts from Russia, but apart from the negotiations over price, they also want technology transfer and joint production.

However, regardless of Indonesias serious interest in the deal, the Kremlin may not grant the two conditions easily as eight aircrafts form a relatively small number.

"For the moment, (we plan to buy) just eight, and the negotiations were underway," Minister Ryacudu affirmed.

While refusing to put a figure that the government has put forth as the price, Minister Ryacudu hoped Indonesia should get a good deal as it had purchased myriad military weapons from Russia in the past, too.
